Making your Lab More Green: Equipment, Plastics, Standards, and More. Learning from Green Labs Across the Pond
Laboratories are extremely energy intensive, and require immense consumption of single-use items (often plastics). Much is being done to mitigate these effects, and make labs as green and sustainable as possible. In this talk, we’ll look at why sustainability is relevant in laboratories, and learn what initiatives are growing in the UK and EU.

Integrated Systems Engineering Benefits Resiliency and Sustainability
While program-specific systems engineering solutions can be efficient, their application is often siloed due to a lack of complementary program elements. A laboratory in a predominantly heating environment can benefit from a high-density data center that always requires cooling, but seldom are such programs linked together. Such a symbiotic relationship, however, can lead to significant improvements in energy efficiency. This session will demonstrate how integrated systems engineering can efficiently bridge the gap between complementary program elements while improving resiliency.

The Big Switch: Transitioning Existing Manufacturing to Meet the Challenges of New Technology
As the technology practiced in a lab or a manufacturing environment changes, the design and function of the space must change, too. One example of a big change involves gene and cell therapy. Gene and cell therapy are changing the nature of how we look and treat diseases. As more and more manufacturers are getting into this particular sphere of medicine, they are looking at ways to reuse their existing space and make it viable for this important landscape. Jeff Gilmore, PE and Grayson Heller of cGMPnow, along with Alicia Pandimos Maurer, AIA of CannonDesign, will provide specifics on these manufacturing space transitions. The team will discuss the implications of this change on the building and how we as an industry can make this transition in space more seamless and smoother.

Breaking Out of the Box: Rethinking the Way We Work to Create More Sustainable Labs
In recent years, the global green labs movement has greatly accelerated with thousands of scientists looking at how they can minimize the environmental footprint of their research. But it can be challenging to change how we work, to break out of the boxes that define our routines and habits. In this presentation we will look at strategies for breaking out of these boxes to make small, simple changes that can have a big impact on reducing energy, water, and waste in the lab.

Connecting Sustainable Scientific Research and Social Justice
Discussions of social justice and equity are often overlooked aspects of sustainability within the laboratory sustainability field. Many of us focus on environmental impacts of research and the economic benefits of sustainability innovation, but social justice and equity are often left out of the conversation. Experts have long defined sustainability as happening in the overlap of environmental, economic, social, and culturally sound processes, practices, and efforts. The goal of this presentation is to help participants start to make connections between laboratory facilities, research, and social justice issues, and to expand our understanding of sustainability. This session will help participants understand how social justice and equity relate to research spaces, with specific examples that can be shared and implemented in other labs. Researchers, lab managers, designers, engineers, architects, administrators, and green labs facilitators all have something to gain from this presentation, which will enable participants to be more aware of equity issues that are connected to the laboratory environment and the intensive resource use of the research enterprise. All levels of awareness of social justice issues are welcome.

Top 10 Things You Can Do to Increase Lab Sustainability
Drawing from past projects and Best Practices, Pat Larrabee of Facility Logix will review the top 10 things lab managers and facility operators can do to increase the sustainability of their lab operations, including recommendations on how to win management support (and funding!) for implementation. From equipment selection to management of chemicals and consumables, this presentation offers a handy way to “find your lab joy” by making small changes that contribute to improved sustainability.
